.... it's fortunate that the child has focused his/her attention on the
mouthpiece rather than the keywork. The parents may want to keep this
in mind as they try to deal with protecting the mouthpiece ---
unexpected consequences.

Hanging an inexpensive painted tapestry (such as every swap meet sells)
on the wall in front of the student, and a bit of carpet on the floor,
is another idea. (This would improve the acoustics of some music-store
cubicles.)
