Joe,

The M13, M15, and 5RV Lyre are my three favorite mouthpieces in
the Vandoren line. They all give a very centered, focused sound,
with the M13 being the most focused, and the 5RV Lyre being the
least of these three (they are all at one end of the Vandoren
spectrum of mouthpieces.) This gives *me* a more "Chedeville"
mouthpiece sound.

For me, the M13 is a little too pinched sounding for me, and the
5RV Lyre is a little too "woofy" or basset hound sounding for
me. This is a BIG exaggeration, as I like playing on all three.

Vandoren mouthpieces up near the B44, B45, B45 dot, B46, and 2RV
seem to be VERY basset hound sounding to me, which, in my
description, is an unfocused sound that you have to pinch more
with your mouth. These mouthpieces remind me more of the
"Kaspar" mouthpieces of old. I have many scale pitch problems
when using the Kaspar type mouthpieces, and I also cannot use as
hard a reed for resilience of sound (for me).

I use an M15 on my Bb and A, and on my C and Eb clarinets, I use
Clark Fobes' San Francisco model mouthpieces (Clark is on our
list here.) I have students using M13s, M15s, and 5RV Lyres. I
have one student using a Hite mouthpiece, and 2 others using
other Vandorens (2RV and 5RV *without* the Lyre) and I am not as
happy with their technique in tonguing, not am I satisfied with
their overall tone production, but they are short on finances
and will not be changing to another mouthpiece soon.

I really like the Vandoren M15 for many reasons, as they are
inexpensive, readily accessible everywhere, and more easily
replaced. The Fobes mouthpieces I play on are great too, but you
specifically asked about Vandoren mouthpieces and why use them,
so that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
