Jeremy,

There are without doubt a number of things ranging from simple little
"tricks" to general techniques that can help improve sight-reading. Some
have already been mentioned. There's also an unlimited amount of material
available that you can use to "practice" sight-reading. Without denigrating
the importance of any of that, my experience as a player and a teacher has
shown me that the best way to improve sight-reading skill is to improve
overall playing technique. Scales, arpeggios, thirds, then more difficult
patterns that can be found and practiced in the many standard etude books
and technical tutors all contribute tremendously. These patterns shouldn't
be limited to diatonic major and minor - there are many more scales and
arpeggios, and even thirds and other chained intervals can be practiced
diatonically and chromatically. Your repertory of learned, patterned
responses to frequently encountered musical "vocabulary" is your most basic
aid to accurate sight-reading. Your reaction time when you encounter parts
of these patterns is quicker, and you are then able to concentrate on
reacting note-by-note to fewer passages.
