In addition to the excellent responses to your question, I would suggest
using one of the standard counting systems (I personally prefer the Eastman
system, but there are other good ones also) and sightread by counting aloud.
Something else that has helped my students is counting aloud and doing the
fingerings at the same time. If you stumble in any measure (counting or
fingering), go back to beginning or the beginning of that particular section
and start again. Doing this with a metronome is also something that most of
my students do. They do some counting aloud with the metronome each day as
part of their practice and it really helps their sightreading ability. Good
