| Carpenters, painters, contractors, earth movers,

Typically 2 year / half day courses at local vocational High School or
military background for 2+ years which should get you into a relatively
decent salaried union job.

| auto repair mechanics,

Auto Technicians who know the hardware and software that makes 1990's and up
cars tick pretty much require a 4 year college degree with other added
industry certifications.

| dentists,

Don't get me started on this one..

| computer repair

To get the typical computer repair tech guy walking papers expect at least a
two year college, most probably four year, add industry certifications like
A+, various Microsoft application / OS certifications, and other specialized
training , each requiring thousands of dollars each time to recertify when a
new release level is made public, and you will be rewarded with $10 - $15
per hour as a temp employee with no benefits or $50 per "job". You will
probably pay at least ten times more per hour to the company they represent.

| I bet you will find teachers get a lot less per hour than most others

See above, expecially "computer repair"

| and parents pay almost nothing for a daily group lesson.

The entire community pays a teachers salary thru various tax schemes.. not
just the parents.. Property taxes from everyone in the school district,
state and federal funds allocated from your paycheck to support education.
So for a single "family unit" with school age kids the cost might be low but
the source of the funding is spread out among businesses and people with no
current need for a teachers direct services.

And as HS Band Parent Support Volunteers we get to spend our time off from
our mandated 12 hour work days with 3 hour round trip commutes watching over
car washes, coin drops at Wal-Mart, trucking flowers for flower sales,
selling hotdogs and soda at Music festivals and cupcakes at bakesales all
for no charge for our time. Not that I mind. I enjoy supporting the kids and
teachers that have dedicated their time to music. Some parents put more
sweat equity into the deal than others.

Got to run now and get ready to help out at school with band uniform
fittings...

Steve
