I have found in my profession (not arts based) that those whose ambition is
only to have their egos massaged in a positive way by others do not survive
long in the profession and are extremely disappointed in many aspects of
life.

This isn't a personal hit towards anyone in the group. Just an observation
on my part from 25 years of work in the mines.

Those in my profession that get past the financial survival aspects must
realize that overall personal satisfaction with your life and career is the
overall goal.

At least those who don't crash and burn .

Working and Living in New York City:

Can't be done for $39,000 per year unless you like the cold and a cardboard
box over subway grate sleeping
accomodations or can live with Mom and Dad.

Most folks making that kind of money in NYC end up living 50 or 60 miles out
in the burbs and spend close to 4 hours per day commuting.
You might afford to rent a place in Queens or Brooklyn in a bad area.
$1 million might get you a nice small condo/apartment in Manhattan in walk
in condition.
Decent middle class homes 50 / 60 miles out will run you at least $200,000
Still California Bay Area makes this all look tame.

A relatively safe parking space (your car will be there when you get back)
in a parking lot will cost you at least $15 per day. $6 in bridge tolls,
food and sundry items will be close to double the cost of where you live.
