Subj: [kl] Looking for Middle School Music Teacher in New York (Brooklyn)
Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 18:30:01 -0400

Dear List Colleagues,

Since there has been some writing about arts education in the public
schools, there is another aspect: Here in New York City, for example, there
is a SHORTAGE of qualified, certified instrumental music teachers. The
Project Arts office has been receiving calls from various elementary,
middle, and high schools that need teachers, and they have practically no
one to suggest, even though the base starting salary for NYC teachers is now
$39,000.

I personally have been asked by a principal in Brooklyn to see if I can find
an instrumental music teacher for a middle school (grades 6-8). Duties would
include:

- setting up an intermediate band
- building up a beginning band
- teaching general music

There will probably be a budget of ca. $20,000 to buy instruments, etc. in
addition to a collection of instruments already there. The principal and
district arts coordinator are extremely supportive. The class sizes for
general music are small with 15 students on average.

Teacher must be NYS certified or certified in a state with reciprocity with
New York. (This includes most states.)

If anyone is interested, please e-mail me off-list at:

If you can include your phone number I will call you back

P.S. If anyone can suggest another forum to post this at, please advise me
