Bill,

It could be as simple as readability of the font used to print
the music, or a change in the name of a dynamic to make it a
different edition. I see International Publishers editions of
von Weber Concerti being less than half the price of other
editions, but the editions are usually hard to read, with bad
page turns and errors in the editions. And that's just one
possibility.

This is not to say Kalmus is usually the best edition...quite
the contrary. Most of the time, the Kalmus is the cheapest and
the least reliable.

Where were the costs for the editions found? From Luck's, or
from Kalmus, or from JWPeppers? I usually go straight to the
distributors to find the best cost. Kalmus charges me MUCH less
per clarinet part for Kalmus orchestral parts than I pay for the
parts at distributors...sometimes as much as 60-70% less. I bet
Luck's would do the same for their edition sold directly from
them. This could be a reason for the discrepancy also.

Lastly, different conductors like different editions for
different reasons, i.e. historical accuracy, score in concert
pitch as opposed to written pitch, etc. Librarians for major
orchestras know which edition they use, and probably know off
the top of their head which Scheherezade edition they use. Some
even have liner notes, performance suggestions, and added
bonuses of different instrumentations for smaller orchestras of
ones with less of an instrument. All of these things could make
the price different for edition copyright and for added printing
costs for the added information and parts.

My suggestion would be find out from local (major) orchestras
which one they use, and why. THEY would be the definitive source
for which one is best, unless you know an unbiased person with
BOTH scores that can compare them for you.

Cheers...
