Subj: [kl] Calling for donations - MYA needs "A" clarinets
Date: Mon, 16 Sep 2002 21:56:29 -0400

Some of you will remember that 3 or 4 years ago I called for donations of some "A" clarinets for Midwest Young Artists.

Midwest Young Artists is a fantastic supplementary music program for middle and high school aged kids in the greater Chicago area. It NEVER seems to stop growing. They now have 5 - yes count them - 5 orchestras.

The number one orchestra regularly NAILS pieces like Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra". Last year I heard them play the Corigliano Concerto with John Bruce Yeh, then turn right around and do the Copland Concerto as a encore.

Most college orchestras should be so good. They also have jazz, and a choral program, and two years ago stated teaching theory classes.

My son, a violinist, and now a bassist as well, has been fortunate to benefit from this program for several years!

Anyway, there are probably 12 high school age clarinets in the orchestras who sometimes need an "A" clarinet. When I asked a number of years ago, two people donated clarinets (One of them was Guy Legere' - thanks again Guy!).

The donation is tax deductable, and MYA will supply a letter that you can use for tax purposes.

My contribution is and will be to keep the A clarinets and their Bass clarinets in working order - no charge.

So, if there are any unused "A" clarinets out there, send them to me. If they need work, I will fix them up. Then I wil deliver them to the MYA Music Director, Alan Dennis.

If you want more info on MYA, go to: www.mya.org.

If you go to the website, there's a picture of a summer concert put on by their summer orchestra. My son was in that group and LOVED it - his two favorite pieces were "Symphonie Espagnole" and "Theme from Rocky". (You can see me standing in the audience, wearing a red T-shirt and shorts.)

Thanks in advance for any donations!
