There is a book that was published in 1995 by United Musical Instruments
Corporation titled "Spin-Offs" The Extra-Musical Advantages of a Musical
Education by Dr. Robert Cutietta, Univ, of Arizona; Dr. Donald L. Hamann,
Kent State Univ; and Dr. Linda Miller; Kent State Univ. that has a ton of
studies about music and academic achievement. There are many that compared
SAT and ACT and other standardized test results in several majors including
music. They also look at reading, language, foreign language, math,
academics, does missing classes for music lessons hurt academic achievement
(no), music and school dropout rates, self esteem, social skills, creativity,
psychological, and social effects perceptual motor skill and psychomotor
skill development, and all sorts of things you would not even think of. It
is very informative. I am not sure the book is still in print, but you might
try to contact United Musical Instruments (which is Conn and King) or one of
the authors. Hopefully this will help.
