There is virtually no band literature that does justice to the alto

I absolutely agree with you, Gary. No musician should consider
him/herself to be the slave of a composer. But..... and I hope my next
thought doesn't come across as sarcasm or criticism, but I notice that
you say:

"re-write the 3rd clarinet part of a quartet" and "rewrite a Bb solo for
the Alto" and "transpose the band part into an easy key" and "give them
a challenge".

I wonder if something is missing here? How about "_write_" and "give
_yourself_ a challenge"?

I have no desire to be a composer or performer; but (imo) there's
equally as much personal pleasure, or perhaps more pleasure, in writing
something oneself and playing it as there is in learning to play someone
else's music.

YMPV (your mileage probably varies), of course.

Cheers,
Bill
