"Pochette" means "small bag" and is a violin with
three strings and a very small corpus (I hope this is
the same word in english!). The pochette could easily
be put in a trouser pocket. From the 16th to the 19th
century it was used by "Tanzmeister" to teach their
pupils and is therefore also called
"Tanzmeistergeige".

When I was in Paris last october I also visited the
music museum in "Cité de la musique" and I enjoyed it
as much as you. The museum has got it's own web-page
(http://www.cite-musique.fr/anglais/musee/index.htm)
where you'll find lots of pictures and sound-clips as
for example of the Octo-bass or of a Stradivarius.
