This is probably the wrong time to start a serious thread about period
instruments because many of us who know about them or who care about
them are on vacation right now, but a related question is:

While period instruments have disappeared for good reason (didn't play
well, were too expensive or cumbersome, couldn't be maintained easily,
etc), did any of these instruments have advantages that modern
instruments lack?

On balance, I'm sure that modern instruments are 'better'; but have we
lost anything at all during the many transitions? Really, the reason I
investigated the bulbous bell (and I still enjoy it) was just to hear
why Stadler choose to perform with one --- if in fact he made the choice
himself.

Cheers,
Bill
