Subj: [kl] Legato fingers/hand position question
Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 15:38:13 -0400

I recently had a lesson with a great player who was a
former Bonade student and was finally shown the
"legato fingers" approach to fingering the clarinet
during slow passage work. He noticed that my fingers
were in the tradiational "C" curved position and
stated that my fingers looked tense and should be less
curved and flattened out. This also resulted in my
thumb being less on the thumbrest, which he rcommended
too. He demonstrated and it was amazing what I heard
- smooth legato with a very quick and elegant
technique. His fingers were hardly moving and looked
so effortless. My training has always revoled around
the more curved fingers. So.. here is a question: who
out there plays with flatter fingers and takes a
similar approch to playing and/or teaching the
clarinet? In the brief time I have been doing this, I
definitely feel more relaxed regarding hands and
fingers. Looks like another piece of the puzzle to toy
with!

Thanks!
