Larry Guy's book is my favorite also. (In fact, I David may have
introduced it to me when I asked the same sort of question a few years
ago.)

There are so many variables in a reed that trying to identify "This area
does this" and "That area does that" is not reliable. Some books get
bogged down while attempting to find an explanation for everything.
Reed and mouthpiece and embouchure and all the rest of it interact, and
no two combinations are identical. So probably there shouldn't be a
single formula for all situations.

What counts is understanding some basic principles. Guy's book says
what needs to be said, and then he leaves you free to pursue your own
goals.
