Klarinet Archive - Posting 000199.txt from 2002/08

Language change is one non-stop process of breaking what is fixed and fixing
what isn't broken, as well as constantly refining the capability of naming
things. Whether a word is useful and will stand the test of time will be
determined by whether people find a use for it. English, the compost heap
of languages, with a Germanic structure, a massive French lexicon, and
significant borrowings from Latin, Celtic, Norse, etc, is the perfect medium
for fertilizing such change.

"...Why not
just keep the bass clarinet name the same and call the Bb clarinet a Bb
soprano bass clarinet or maybe you prefer Bb soprano claibass? How about
not
trying to fix what is not broken?
