The fingering for throat F#

I read an article written by Gino Cioffi, who was for many years the
principal of the Boston symphony.
In it he stated what he learned in Italy.
Going up the chromatic scale, one uses the Thumb for F plus the two first
side keys,
(7&8)
On the way down, the index finger of the left hand is used.
That seems to be the general rule.
There are, of course, exceptions.
When you trill from F to F#, you hold down the thumb of the left hand and
trill with the two keys. There are other cases where a flatter pitch might
be necessary, then use the side fingering (if it is flat.)
In the upper register, the side fingering can be used successfully to play
a soft transition passage.
There are numerous uses for the side fingering.
One can find them in the Klose mechanism exercises, enumerated in my book
Tone Technique and Staccato (published by MelBay
