I almost always use lh-index except for chromatic runs and sometimes long notes in "solo"
passages. On my clarinet the F-with-trill-keys is perfectly in tune (surely that should be so on
any good clarinet - that is what it is for), and gives a slightly clearer tone. Starngely,
exactly the same argument applies for F# an octave higher: the fork (rh-index & 3rd) is a fraction
clearer sound than the rh-middle, but obviously not so easy to use except for chromatic and long.
In both cases I believe this is because the "standard" fingering leads to a closed hole further
down the instrument than the first open hole. In the 3rd register, the Eb is heaps better with
the fork fingering - here the "cross" fingering is close to encouraging a further harmonic, so
doesn't speak so easily (well that's been true on my instruments now and in the past).
