I used to think that moving was funny and so I was very
self-conscious about how I looked. However, I began studying with one
instructor who taught me that moving is in essence putting your
feelings into the piece. He said it's like singing, except through an
instrument. I understood this, as I love to sing, and when I applied
this to the clarinet, my playing improved dramatically. I no longer
am concerned as to how I look, rather how I sound. I believe that
swaying, or moving is an affect as to your feeling involved in the
piece. So, I think the issue really lies in how you are playing - is
it with your head, or your heart/feelings.
Now some people really get into it and it's like a show. As to this,
I do not understand how they produce a great sound while dancing on
stage. But another thing my teacher said, which I'm still trying to
learn, is that when you play a piece, you have to envision a story
that the music is telling. So, it's kinda like acting. I don't know,
but perhaps that's what these people are doing.
