Subj: RE: [kl] Are you a mover & a shaker? - Meyer
Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 07:36:57 -0400

Having attended last Friday's performance by Sabine Meyer in Sydney, I too
confirm that she dipped and swayed like a demented elephant, and in the
first and third movements seemed to execute a variation of the Foxtrot.

The body movement was so serious as to be off-putting, and only the superbly
rendered Adagio saved it for me. I suppose one could advise closing one's
eyes and listening to the music, but where I was seated, the acoustics were
not marvellous.

In the third movement, there was a passage toward the end, where I thought
her extreme motion caused her to momentarily lose control of her embouchure.

In my view, Meyer's performance, whilst marvellous music, was a very good
argument for seating the soloist.

I have to eat humble pie as I type this....
I have always firmly believed that movement while you play (other than
breath and slight movement ) will detract from the sound quality and pitch
of student performers. I have however just returned from Sabine Meyer
performing Mozart in the Sydney Opera House and she danced to her
performance. She did more than sway, she was intensly distracting. In
saying this - the shock that I got watching her dance was multiplied by the
fact that she was pitch perfect. In fact her performance was the single
BEST ever that I have heard.
