Bill,

Unless the policy has changed, you would basically have to take
all of your e-mail and forward it to another e-mail address
(meaning you would have to have both addresses active for a few
days.)

I have searched the Microsoft Knowledgebase, and it also backs
this theory up. Outlook, which is one of the more versatile
softwares for reading e-mail from any ISP, CANNOT read AOL
e-mail by itself, because of the proprietary data compression
that makes the e-mail unreadable outside of AOL.

There are interfaces out there for downloading and reading AOL
e-mail yourself with an e-mail "client" such as Outlook, but
having worked for 14 years with e-mail systems as my specialty,
if you have more mail than is feasible to forward from one
e-mail system to another while both are in operation, then you
probably should get rid of 75% of your stored mail and go back
to try again. The interfaces on the web are usually beta
releases (not fully tested or supported) or cost money to buy.

You *could* try eNetBot Mail, which is free for 30 days. The
link is here...

Use it to download AOL e-mail into Outlook, transfer the
downloaded e-mail into a "personal folder" and cut the cord to
AOL. You can then reconfigure the Outlook client to read your
NEW e-mail account from your new ISP. Make sure you back up the
personal folders in Outlook to a Zip disk or a rewritable CDRom
and keep it somewhere outside your computer, just in case you
ever have to reformat your computer. If this isn't backed up and
you have to reload the operating system, you will lose this
data, and AOL will tell you where to get off if you ask about a
backup after you have dropped them.

If you use this utility (eNetBot Mail) within the 30 day trial
to download your AOL mail, you don't have to license it, and you
pay nothing.

The option with the least room for fault is just forwarding all
of the e-mail in your AOL account to the new address after it is
setup (and while the AOL account is still operational.) It is
tedious, but will give you an item by item transfer confirmation
when the e-mail gets to the new address.

If you have any other questions, drop me a line.
