The first violinist?? I had a hard time observing any of the string players
amidst Leister's absurd and obnoxious physical behavior during that performance.
It was absolutely jarring watching him suddenly *erupt* from his compact body
posture, starting with the bell down between his legs to further darken his
tone. Out of nowhere, an almost violent motion that appeared as if he was
literally about to jump out of his chair and pounce upon the second violinist.
I honestly didn't know what to make of it, but the distraction was severe and
I simply had to close my eyes. I thought at first that he was trying to sig-
nal her somehow, as if she had made a mistake, except that he kept doing it,
over and over again at intervals, rapidly parting his legs and thrusting his
bell jerkily over to his right, straight at the second violinist each time.
And then, as quickly, he would return the bell to its invisible position be-
tween his legs, closing them together again. The only other times I've ever
had to close my eyes due to visible distractions like that were during Dallas
Symphony concerts with Litton the Rodeo Clown on the podium.
