I flew from MT to NM and back at the end of June, and had very few
problems. I sent my bass (wrapped in bubble wrap in its case) in a
stryofoam-lined cardboard box sealed with duct tape through luggage, and
the instrument arrived (at both ends) just fine. I carried the roll of
tape in my carry-on just in case, but there were no problems. I carried
on my clarinet and bass stand, and the only problem was that the security
people couldn't figure out what that solid thing was that showed up on
the x-ray; they searched the bag by hand (DO NOT try to help them!),
going right to that end, to see what it was. (Top end of stand.) If you
carry a reed knife/file, take it out of your case and send it with your
baggage. Ditto a pocketknife (it's what I use on my reeds). Again, DO NOT
try to take it in the cabin!

I was never searched, and that first time was the only time my bag was
looked at, but I regularly saw other people getting pulled out of line.
Good luck!

I had my metronome and tuner in the case and there were no questions.
However, when I arrived at my home airport, we heard this strange sound
in the back of the car and found the mentronome had been turned on! I had
sent the carryon through luggage via the cart parked at the bottom of the
plane's ladder, so somewhere in handling it was bumped just right . . .
good thing there's a lot of noise at the airport and most everyone wears
ear protection and that this is a dinky airport -- 'cause I got the
loudest metronome the store had!

A number of years ago, I took my clarinet and folding metal stand with
me, and the bag got stopped under the x-ray. The security people were
quite puzzled, until this big black dude strolled up, looked, and said,
"Horn -- clarinet -- broken down into bits. Music stand." And that was
that.
