Some Saturday afternoon humour (this is true):
One time (pre-September 11) when I was flying with my single case, I was
requested to open the case when I was going through security. The attendent
looked at the clarinet, then looked at me with a puzzled expression and said
"Where's the battery?" I, of course (while trying very hard not to laugh),
was bewildered by such an odd question, as clarinets are not
battery-powered, but then I realized that the Xray machine had detected the
metronome (with battery) in the pocket of the case cover.

My advice: if you are flying, you will probably want to make sure that your
reed knife and battery-powered metronome are in your checked baggage. I
wouldn't expect anyone to handle your instrument & reeds. My experience
with travelling is that I have been asked to open the case and compartments
and show the attendent the contents. If you do leave your metronome in the
case, be prepared to give a quick demonstration of what it is and how it
works.

Have a good trip!
