My "old" Sony MD (RZ-55) has both optical and analog output, no special
software required to take the optical or analog "line out", record it, and
burn a CD with it. Since the MD has compression algorithms built-in it's not
really a pure "digital format" such as DAT tape - it's a lossy compression
algorithm.

The (sony) MD has no optical line out (it has optical in). Connection to
PC goes by USB and then the software of Sony. It seems not possible to
get the MD format (ATRAC) converted to MP2/WAV for burning to CDR(W).
