I thought I'd done enough putting all my sharp tools in my checkin luggage, but
I left a tiny adjustable spanner, around three and a half inches long, weighing
a couple of ounces, in my clarinet case. (It can be useful for locked
wing-nuts on music stands, etc.) The degree of excitement that this caused the
security guard had to be seen to be believed. He called the supervisor, who
confiscated it with tremendous fuss. Heaven knows what damage he thought I
could do with it. He claimed it counted under 'tools', which are apparently
generically forbidden. I said jokingly that it would make a nice present for
his son, which nearly got me into deeper trouble.

This on a US internal flight. So be warned.
