Subj: [kl] Swab removal tool

I "invented" a tool years ago for removing stuck oboe swabs. It was the
only oboe repair I ever did! But, it works well on clarinets too.

It is very simple to make if you have a long section of rod stock (for
woodwind rods). The rod I used is about .060" in diameter. Simply flare one
end with a jeweler's hammer and then file (or cut with a jeweler's saw)a
"fish hook" into the flare. I file the end of the flared section so that it
has a slim arrowhead and also cut a notch at the tip of the arrowhead.

I chuck the tool into my bench motor, BUT ONLY TURN IT BY HAND!!. I then
place the joint with swab over the tool and turn the tool as I apply
pressure. The notch in the end of the tool will chew into the swab. Then
pull the joint away from the tool. Most swabs come out on one try.

An important habit to get into is to swab the clarinet from the barrel end.
If the swab gets stuck (always on the pip) it will be easier to remove from
that end.

For Buffet owners, just throw out the swab that comes with the horn. Buffet
has not made a decent swab in 20 years. I prefer the BG swabs. They have a
nice "tear drop" shape and are very well made. They are also very absorbent
and can be washed.
