Earlier this summer, I flew to Austria to study for a few weeks. I had the same concerns you do. Fortunately, I had no problems on the trip there, but did get searched at the Charles de Galle Airport in Paris on the way back. On the ramp to the plane, a security officer made me open my case so he could inspect it. It was an inconvience, but nothing major. Once back in the US, security was more concerned with my belt buckle than with my clarinets.
