If you already have sufficient amplifying, and are just looking for a
recorder, a great, inexpensive solution is the Creative Labs Nomad. They
are digital mp3 players, which also do line-in recording with an 1/8"
jack (it records a .wav file). They make 6gig, 20gig and I think there's a
new 30gig version. With the 6 gig, you get enough space to record about 6
hours at 44.1kHz. I have about 100 CD's worth of mp3's on mine, and still
have enough space to record for an hour and a half, enough for virtually
any concert in which I play. Then, afterwards, I just upload the .wav
files to my computer and edit them there with an editor like Goldwave.

The one big drawback with the Nomads is that they require
pre-amplification, because it's just line-in recording. But, for under
$300 (American) you get a versatile little machine that can record well.
In fact, the piece I uploaded yesterday to
http://www.columbia.edu/~schiffer/barnes.html was dubbed from a cassette
tape onto the Nomad...

Of course, if you don't already have a pre-amped mixer, this whole bit of
advice is moot, unless you are looking for a good portable mp3 player...

But, as one who doesn't own any recording equipment, it's great for
plugging into others' stuff to get my own recordings of concerts in which
I play. I've even gone from audience camcorders and had it sound
astoundingly good by just plugging into their headphone jack.
