The coat hanger might have been a mistake, but it would take a pretty
severe scratch to cause any significant problems. Your local store's
repair tech, or any competent repair tech, will have the tools to remove
the swab in a matter of minutes. There should be no damage done unless you
put too much stress on the register tube. Leave it to the professionals to
take care of. They probably won't even charge you. I second the
suggestion about the silk swab, too. Maybe not quite as absorbent, but I
have never seen one even CLOSE to getting stuck, since they compress very
nicely.
