Bravo! The difference between sarcasm, irony, farce, and just plain wit is
a matter of degree and opinion. I agree with Joe that there is a place for
all of these (and more) degrees of humor in music, as well as other aspects
of life. I believe sometimes the essence of art is willfully NOT saying
what we mean, with varying degrees of subtlety...else why would we call it
art?

Sarcasm may be inappropriate for Tristan und Isolde, or the Mozart Clarinet
Concerto. But is it inappropriate for, say, the clarinet solos in the last
movement of Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique?...
Needless to say I think this attitude is a very small-minded view of art,
expressiveness and culture. At the least, it's shooting the messenger.
