Odd, I thought it was by Rachmaninov, and for contra alto, not contrabass.
Perhaps Barnes was simply the band arranger. I played the part probably in
'91 at San Francisco State Univ. I remember the theme because, cutely enough,
it's the retrograde inversion of Rachmaninov's theme from his Paganini piano
variations.
