We have an organization called the Sacramento Valley Symphonic Band
Association that started many years ago with an idea and a single band.
I think it is now about 5 - 7 bands strong. They give performances for
local civic groups at holidays, (Christmas, 4th of July, etc.), senior
citizen housing developments (the type that have their own golf courses)
senior care centers, shopping malls that like to provide this type of
entertainment, and receive a donation of $200 - $500 that enables them
to pay their directors and purchase music. In some of the venues we
take donations from the public via a coffee can set at the front of the
band but this usually goes for a scholarship fund that pays for private
lessons for a few of the high school age musicians in the band. All the
bands share their music and have access to the music from the high
school in which they rehearse (see next paragraph).

Several bands in my area make arrangements to borrow music from local
high schools in return for some type of service to the school, i.e. a
concert, a clinic event prior to a concert that culminates with your
band and the high school band performing a few tunes each, separately,
and then finishing the majority of the tunes as combined bands. This
builds good will with the school administration, impresses the students
and their parents, helps the band director look good and gets him/her on
your side, and does a good deed public service to all involved and is
good publicity that may develop into a future gig for the band.

The musicians in these bands also pay about $35 yearly dues that helps
fund the insurance policy that covers all musicians in all the bands
that belong to the overseeing organization.

Some more informed people in this organization that lurk on this list
could give more details if they would speak up at this time.
