Subj: [kl] Bass Clarinet Part for Hindemith Bassoon Sonata
Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2002 20:30:27 -0400

Many years ago, at the Clarinet Congress in London, I took a bass clarinet
lesson from Josef Horak, and he gave me a copy of his hand-written bass
clarinet part for the Hindemith Bassoon Sonata. He told me it was
note-for-note the same as the original, just in treble clef and up a step. I
don't think it's ever been published.

As Michael Bryant says, Hindemith gave him permission to play the sonata on
bass, and Horak said that Hindemith actually preferred the music on bass, at
least when Horak played it. (He's a remarkable player.)

I recently found the part in a stack of old stuff. The lowest note is E, so
you don't need a low-C instrument.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
