I play R13s with a obsolete but suitable Boosey and Hawkes 926
mouthpiece. The acute register plays in tune. My Noblet C clarinet
was supplied, long ago, with a poor quality Noblet mouthpiece.
When the Noblet C clarinet was played with the 926 mouthpiece
the tone was immediately improved, but the tenon joint was
found to be too long by 1-2mms and the throat notes were flat.
I shortened the mouthpiece tenon myself. I intended to put a small
plastic washers in the R13s but never needed to do it. With the help
of the late George Howarth we successfully retuned the
throat notes of the C clarinet by slightly increasing the diameters
of the holes (Aflat, Bflat, sidekey Bflat and sidekey C) by trial and error,
(not so much error, but an iterative process). It has been in frequent use,
and has not required any further attention.
