The old 78's were made of a compound made primarily of shellac. Very hard,
good for resisting wear from tracking forces measured in pounds (well,
ounces really) rather than grams. Unfortunately, also quite brittle, which
contributes to their rarity today (that plus the wartime scarcity of
shellac which resulted in quite a bit of "recycling"). I have some 78 rpm
V-Discs made during WW II for military troops that are pressed on vinyl,
which I should think would have proven more suitable for sending overseas, etc.
