What the heck is a "tradsnob"?

In western Europe, at least, "trad" music is short for "traditional"
music --- mostly because "traditional" is too long a word to post on
signs in pub windows. It means folk music arranged for traditional
instruments --- albeit the modern versions thereof may be quite
different from the original 'period' instruments.

As happens with every word in the hands of people who like to distort
words, in Waterford I saw a sign in a pub window that said "Trad Rock
Tonight!".

I doubt that Kimber herself was aware of this derivation, but I can
imagine that "trad snob" has become a word in certain younger circles.

I agree with Walter that moderation is not desirable, and if we were
having a vote, I'd vote against it.

But I also agree that the focus and the quality of prose has slipped
during the last few months. Among other people, we've lost Ed Lacy in
part because of it. None of us are completely innocent --- witness the
discussion on censorship in education to which most of us contributed
(and which I regretfully started).

On the other side of the coin, too narrow a focus is also undesirable
(imo). When it comes to quality prose, I think all of us enjoy an
occasional word from Shadow or Dick Vigorous, for example.

Perhaps it's best for all of us to recognize the trend, and to keep it
in the back of our colective mind.

Does that cover the territory sufficiently?

Cheers,
Bill
