Greg,

Add me to the list of players that regularly use a C clarinet in a
professional setting and with a Bb/A mouthpiece.

Similarly, I have found that obtaining the correct length and bore barrel
for the C clarinet (regardless of the maker of the clarinet) will address
this question quite well.

In my experience, one does not have to sacrifice a "Bb" mouthpiece by
shortening it in order to get the C clarinet to play optimally in terms of
both tonal sonority and tuning. Just as a practical matter, if one is to
switch between the Bb/A and C clarinet on the same piece or in the same
concert, for reliability's sake they have to be able to play the same
mouthpiece/reed combination on both.

Chadash makes a standard C barrel that is designed to play on C clarinets
with regular Bb mouthpieces. All 4 of us in the Chicago Symphony clarinet
section play our C clarinets (Buffet and Leblanc) with our regular Bb
mouthpieces. I believe Nancy Buckman also uses my Bb mouthpiece on her
Patricola C clarinet...but perhaps she will correct me if I am mistaken.
Whether she had a different barrel made for it, I am not sure.
