Yes, I know about this edition by Alan Hacker and Richard Platt (Faber 1985)
There are as you say many examples of non-playing dedications
Needless to say, in the age of patronage, and 'pockets' of patronage
thereafter, the dedicatee was frequently a man or woman of means.
Probably Boston stipulated the dedication by Stravinsky and paid for it.
Examples do not prove anything, but here are a few:
Crusell Quartet Op 4 - Brandel - diplomat
Crusell Concerto Op11 - Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden - conductor etc
Bax Sonata - Hugh Prew - cricketer and friend of the composer, amateur
clarinet player, a photograph of whom hangs in the Fairfield Hall, Croydon
(seen by David Campbell)
Reger Quintet - Carl Wendling - quartet leader
Bliss Quintet - Bernhard van Dieren - composer
Elgar Symphony No1 - Hans Richter, true artist and friend - conductor
Elgar Symphony No2 - D. to the memory of K. Edward VII - monarch (1911)
