Subj: [kl] Conservative Clarinet Ensemble Ranges?
Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 01:07:04 -0400

Hello, Klarinet List.

A few days ago I spoke with Professor Joze
Kotar on the phone, just before he went traveling,
and will not be in E-Mail contact for about a
month. He asked me to consider writing a work
for their Clarinet Sextet, and knows that I have
several deadlines that will keep me busy until
Spring 2003. But in the meantime, I'd like to be
sure of the Conservative Ranges for his ensemble.

I have shaved off the Upper Notes of the Lower
Clarinets, just to be Conservative, but I'd like to
confirm these ranges with you guys. (I've never
even SEEN an Alto Clarinet up close, nor a Contra
Bass Clarinet. Not being a player, I have to rely
on the advice of the Hand-On Experts, like you
guys.)

Conservative Ranges for these Clarinets?

E-Flat Sopranino Clarinet:
Concert C Sounding Range:
Small G (below Middle C) up to
Bb-3 (5 lines above the Treble Clef).

Transposed Written Range:
Small E (below Middle C) up to
G-3 (4 lines above the Treble Clef.)

B-flat Soprano Clarinet:
Concert C Sounding Range:
Small D (in the middle of the Bass Clef)
up to Eb-3 (3 lines above the Treble Clef.)

Transposed Written Range:
Small E (below Middle C) up to
F-3 (3 lines above the Treble Clef.)

E-flat Alto Clarinet:
Concert C Sounding Range:
Great G (at the bottom of the Bass Clef)
up to Ab-2 (one line above the Treble Clef.)

Transposed Written Range:
Small E (below Middle C) up to
F-3 (3 lines above the Treble Clef.)

B-flat Bass Clarinet (Student Model):
Concert C Sounding Range:
Great D (just under the Bass Clef) up to
D-2 (on the 4th line of the Treble Clef.)

Transposed Written Range:
Small E (below Middle C) up to
E-3 (3 lines above the Treble Clef.)

B-flat Contra Bass Clarinet:
Concert C Sounding Range:
Contra D (5 lines below the Bass Clef)
up to Small Bb (just under Middle C.)

Transposed Written Range:
Small E (below Middle C) up to
C-3 (2 lines above the Treble Clef.)

Are these OK? Please advise.
