Britt,

Some C clarinets are made for use with C mouthpieces only, and
some are made to be used with Bb/A mouthpieces. I have a
Patricola C clarinet, which is supposed to be used with a Bb
mouthpiece, although my Greg Smith mouthpiece didn't work at all
on it (the throat tones were 1/2 step flat, and woofy sounding,
while the rest of the scale was skewed.)

The Buffet C clarinets, I believe, are made to play with C
clarinet mouthpieces, and the only maker I know of off the top
of my head for C specific clarinet mouthpieces would be the
Morgan mouthpieces.

I have a great Clark Fobes Bb (San Francisco model) mouthpiece
that worked really well on my Patricola C clarinet. I did have
the bottom tenon on the mouthpiece reduced in length, as it was
a little flat all throughout the scale. You might can do this
with another mouthpiece, if you have one you like playing, but
you HAVE TO try it on the C clarinet you are getting or have to
make sure it will NOT have funny notes that don't speak, because
of an incompatability, you HAVE TO have a person with the
equipment to take off just a little of the length without
damaging the mouthpiece, and you HAVE TO be willing to part with
the mouthpiece for your Bb/A clarinet playing, as it will be
unusable for that afterward, as it will be very sharp.

Contact me privately if you want more info on the ins and outs
of my finding a C clarinet and mouthpiece, as it would be very
lengthy for the list...
