<<My 17-year-old son bristles when I refer to his beloved grunge, etc. as

"pop." I figure I am just on target and hitting the nerve squarely. I
know that the big band music I like, while I think of it as jazz, was
certainly considered "pop" in its day.>>

Being a member of this generation and a memberof the underground rock
scene as well as a clarinetist I would like to add my twocents to this
discussion of the definition of "Pop" music. The reason Bill's son
bristled at "his" music being referred to as "Pop" is because, by the
definition Pop has taken on it most certainly is not. Sometime in the
90s when the genres of popular music became more and more defined using
the word Pop to refer to all forms of popular music, be it metal, rock,
"bubblegum", R&B, Punk or any other form, fell by the wayside and became
the term for a particular brand of music, in particular, groups and
artists that are contrived by the big name labels such as Brittney
Spears, N*Sync and other such "bands" (A COMPLETE Misnomer if there ever
was one) , and most Singer/Songwriters (not all but many of them can fall
into this category). Your son, Bill, got his dander up because by its new
definition Pop music represents not only "selling out" (a cardinal sin
among the punk/grunge world) but also EVERYTHING that is wrong with the
music business (anyone who has heard the kind of groups being pushed on
our young people now know exactly what I am referring to) Therefore,
while the original definition still holds its place somewhat, like many
words in the English language it has changed its meaning and now refers
to one very specific genre of music. Hope this clears up any musical
disputes for all of those parents of people from my generation.
Especially those with muical tastes similar to mine (God bless you if you
tolerate such "noise" and "racket")
