Diane Karius says: "The [Wagner] transcript has the Eb clarinet, the piccolo
and the oboe playing in unison. There is NO definition of unison that
describes the ensuing sound. "

Actually --

Consider the sound made by instruments playing in tune. Orange noise
consists of everything else -- everything that's NOT in tune. The standard
example is a room full of first graders, all playing soprano recorders. But
Eb clarinet, piccolo and oboe comes close :-). If ever there was a musical
equivalent of a toothache, that's it.
