James Marioneau related this tale of woe:

<<<The conductor just showed me the repetoire list for next season. It has
some really good material, but there is an all Gershwin concert (which I
personally don't mind), but on another concert, I will be performing that
wonderful masterpiece "Clarinet Candy" (ugh, I'm with
you Kevin).>>>

Oh dear . . . I was unaware until this very moment that there is an
orchestral version of this minorpiece. How very, very sad.

Unlike Mr. Callahan (too many Kevins, here, what?), I *do* care for Geo.
Gershwin. Light & American? How about light, American and in Paris?

If a stereotypical "American" sound is required, you can't do better than
Copland's Appalachian Spring. While a bit overplayed, it's a great piece
IMHO. Practice your "white sound!"

If you want "American" and still in the truly terrible class, I have a
personal vendetta against Robert Russell Bennett's Suite of Old American
Dances. I suppose it's not so bad on first hearing, but if I have to play
this once more this lifetime I think that I might kill myself.
