Scott,
Adding to what David says about the University of B.C., I live here in
Vancouver and study privately with one of the two clarinet teachers at
UBC. Wes Foster (my teacher) is Principal Clarinet of the Vancouver
Symphony and a really wonderful and sensitive player with a
drop-dead-gorgeous sound (I will not apologize to anyone here). His
forte then is orchestral, chamber and recital music. The general
consensus is that he's a great teacher, too. Gene Ramsbottom is the
other clarinet teacher at UBC, and is Principal of the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra (CBC Radio) based in Vancouver and
Second Clarinet (I believe) in the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. Gene is
also a wonderful player especially for technique who has a very
different approach to teaching and playing than does Wes, but who has
turned out many very fine musicians. Do check the UBC website for
yourself. If you'd like, I can contact Wes and ask him if he'd mind you
e-mailing him directly to inquire more about his own personal approach.
I don't know Gene well enough to do that comfortably.

Good luck!

Audrey
