I think this is actually much more prevalent than you think. I think
the rationalization (other than being a cheap source of music that
doesn't have to be composed early) is that somehow we will
subconsciously equate this new movie with the pleasant experience of
the old movie. At least that's what I believe, although it could be
purely financial.

One composer that seems to be quoted a lot (and seems to enjoy
quoting himself a lot!) is James Horner. I'm sick of hearing the same
pounding horn cue from "Aliens" that's supposed to be very exciting.
