Sorry to reply so long after a discussion; but I've been incredibly busy
and just caught up with two months' worth of messages. I heard this
performance on a syndicated program called "Music through the night". I
agree that the orchestration is poor. I suspect that the composer didn't
know how to get the effect he wanted. If he's any good he will learn from
this.

I also agree that Stoltzman's performance sounded forced and a bit out of
control. I have heard him attempt to switch performance styles according
to the type of composition. I think that he prides himself on his ability
to do so. (In fact,he doesn't do it much better than most of us when he
does it in mid-recital; but that was not the case here.) I think that he
was trying to do what the composer asked - which might be exactly what we
heard - and what we heard needs a rewrite.
