As far as I know, and I'm hardly an expert on such matters yet, saying is
primarily an action. Though it has evolved into a noun. Say being the
infinitive of the verb. Say, saying, said being version of the action.
Depending on the version, you'll use either I or I am. In thise case, I
think my error was that I should have used "As you may recall, I said..."
Though whether or not "me saying" is wrong or just stylistically awkward...
For that, I'll have to contact one of my professors.
