Put some orthodontic wax on your lower teeth and you should be able to play
just fine with less lip. In my opinion, if you are creating sound, you
can't have too much mouthpiece in your mouth. If you put too much in you
won't be able to play and make an acceptable sound. You might ask your
orthodontist to give you a chance to adjust your embouchure after each
adjustment that is made in your appliance. I have been through four sets
of braces, with the last set including a surgical break in the lower
jaw. By allowing time for each adjustment, I was able to play very well
throughout the complete treatment, including the actual surgical
procedure. I began playing after only six weeks post-surgery and that was
with partial feeling, as the facial nerves were severed as part of the
surgical procedure.
