I don't know about commercial offerings, but I know quite a number of people
have made reeds from hand out of various kinds of hardwood and softwood.
The term "plastic" is very generic. The current plastic reed offerings
actually run a wide gamut of specific materials. Fibracell, Hartmann's
Fiberreed, and Legere, for example, all seem to be made out of radically
different materials.
